Secret Message Card - CCTV wake up call
Secret message card
Good morning all! So today is a super exciting one, it's Friday the 19th November 2021 and I'm about to go live on Crafter's Companion TV to demo a unique and fun fancy fold card for you all!
So I thought I'd also post the details and instructions right here for you all to follow and craft along with, either during the show or afterwards. The show is live on YouTube but will also be available afterwards, forever! So you can sit down and craft along with me anytime that suits you.
Here's a link to the Live Feed
The show starts at midday and is actually on 7 days a week at the same UK time.
So now for the card. Its actually a pretty basic Card fold with minimal cutting and scoring and all from less than one piece of 12 x 12.
Cut a 12x12 piece of textured cardstock in half to give you two pieces at 6"x12".
Take one piece and score along the short edge at 3", 6" and 9". Now turn 90' and score at 2" from the first score line to the third only. Do the same at 4" across.
Then, with a craft knife and metal ruler, cut along thesw last two score lines you've made. You should have something like this...
Now, take the other piece of 6"x12" and chop two pieces that are 6" x 2 15/16ths of an inch. What I really mean here is cut at just shy of 3", or as Sara Davis would say, a fly's eyelash less than 3' 😁.
These two pieces will slot in side by side into your first piece. Take one small rectangle and slide it over, then under, then over the bands in the middle of the larger piece, and slide to the left. Now flip the whole card over and do the same with the other small piece, over, under, over the bands in the middle, on the right. It'll be tight but that's good, it'll stop them falling out.
You now have your secret message card. Check out the YouTube video above at around 35 mins in to see my full demo too, it's so much easier to show this step in a video than to describe it.
Now the fun part, decorating it!
To make things easier, I've drawn up a measurements board for you to reference when cutting your mats and layers. For mats, you'll need (4x) 5 3/4 x 2 3/4 for the 'gates' inside and out, and (6x) 2 3/4 x 1 3/4 for the six inside panels.
And because I'm a total frugal fran and proud, I've worked out how to get all of these pieces out of one piece of A4 card! Mirror card is expensive after all 😁
Now for the layers, I won't try to explain this too much, I'll just show you a picture and also do check out the YouTube video, it'll definitely help.
Essentially, to pattern match across the gate panels, you'll need
(2x) 5" x 5 1/2" and then cut them down the middle of the 5" side at 2 1/2"
For the 6 panel layer inside, you'll need
(1x) 5" x 4 1/2" piece of patterned paper which you'll cut down the middle of the 5" side at 2 1/2" and then across each strip at 1 1/2" intervals.
And for the secret message panel, I didn't bother with a mat as the card started to get too bulky, so I used a panel that was:
5 1/2" x 5 1/4" and cut it down the middle of the 5 1/2" side at 2 3/4" and then across each of the two strips at 1 3/4" intervals. (see bottom right layers in photo above)
All that's left is to stamp your layers wherever you'd like before sticking them to your card base, I used the sassy sentiments from Sara Signature Rose Gold collection for the secret panel. I also used a mat and layer of the Crafter's Companion moroccan tile nesting die set along with a couple of craft magnets to create a closing flap on the front, with a stamped sentiment in the middle and a blending brush to blend the edges and take off the sharpness of colour with a spectrum noir, pale fig quick dry ink pad.
I also used some pretty vintage rose petal dies to make some flowers using the same cardstock I used for the base and mats. I also die cut butterflies from this too, so it all tied in nicely with the colour scheme.
The paper pad I used was the Sara Signature enchanted dreams 6x6 paper pad. If I had the money I'd buy the whole enchanted dreams collection, it's just stunningly beautiful.
And finally, I added some gems and used the spectrum noir clear overlay sparkle pen on various elements of the patterned paper to make them pop. It was particularly good for making the dragonflies' wings look like they were fluttering when opening the secret message panel.
So that's it! My first ever live TV demo and I loved absolutely every minute of it!! I really hope you enjoyed it too and were able to craft along. If you did I would love to see your take on this card base as I'm sure there are tons of different ways to decorate it. Please tag me in any pics you post up on the I'm a Crafter's Companion Facebook group, I'm so excited to see what you come up with!
Till next time,
take care and happy crafting
