pop up gift bag card
Pop up gift box wallet fold card
Hello! So, I have 5 neices and one of them turns 12 in a couple of weeks. She's at that age where she likes more grown up things and a unicorns and rainbows theme wasn't going to cut it this year. So I thought I'd combine her card with her gift (a beautiful sea turtle bracelet which includes a QR code to track your adopted sea turtle across the ocean!) The Journey Bracelet by Fahlo is an incredible gift that's helping the planet with every purchase and it's a brilliant way to encourage young minds to think about the future of their world. Fahlo works directly with the Turtle Conservatory to provide you with tracking details for your very own turtle so you can watch their every move around thr world!
I can't wait to see her face when she opens this grown up card and finds an even more grown up gift inside!
To make the card, I used a wallet fold card design, an origami design paper bag and combined the two. And it was pretty simple.
I'll leave a list of links to all the products I used at the bottom, but for now, on with the crafting!
To begin with, I took a piece of A4 white stamping card (300gsm) and cut it at 6" lengthways, leaving me with a piece that was 6" x 11 3/4". Score this along the long edge at 5" and 10" and fold and burnish all lines to make your wallet fold card.
Next, I mat and layered this card, the bag can be put in right at the end.
Mats are as follows:
(3x) 5 3/4" x 4 3/4" one for the front and two for inside
(2x) 5 3/4" x 1 1/2" one for the outside flap and one for inside.
Layers as follows:
(3x) 5 1/2" x 4 1/2" one for outside two for inside
(2x) 51/2" x 1 1/4" one for the outside flap, one for the inside
And on to the bag. I took a piece of patterned paper (Art Studio, Rose Gold)
5 1/2" x 10 1/2" and scored as follows:
Score along one long edge, 1/2" and the other long edge 1"
Turn 90' then score along the short edge at the following:
1/2"
1"
5"
5 1/2"
6"
10"
You should have something that looks like this... (I've shaded the parts we can cut away, shaping the larger 1" flaps at the ends)
Once you've cut away the scraps, fold and burnish as the picture shows...
Next, use a pokey tool over a sponge pad to poke holes where the handles will go, the ends of the handles will be covered by the folded over 1" flaps so don't poke holes in the flaps 😁...
Use a blunt tool, I found a toothpick works well, to poke the ribbon handles through from the right side of the bag and secure inside with some washi tape before folding and taping the 1' flap to cover them...
Now you'll want to glue your bag together at the sides (these are the two short sides of your rectangle shape, they fold in on each other to make a zig zag shape, matching the shape made with a mountain valley mountain fold in the middle of your rectangle...
Finally, the bottom two 1/2" flaps will stick to your card base. Lay some red liner tape down on the right side (patterned / outside) of each flap...
Peel one side of red liner off and lay the bag sticky side up against the inside fold of your card base, as in the below picture. Now fold the top of the card closed over the bag to stick it.
Open the card base up and flip the bag onto its other side, remove the red liner and fold the card base over the bag again.
And when you open up the card base a second time the bag should pop up and open, ready to pop a little tissue paper and a cute gift inside.
Decorate how ever you wish. I chose a simple sentiment on the front and used some ribbon width ways across the wallet flap, secured with some tape at the back, to hold the wallet flap down. You could use a strong craft magnet or two instead though, or a velcro dot would work nicely.
And that's it, the card is done, my neice will hopefully love it and it's a great last minute card to knock out for an impromptu birthday party or belated birthday gift.
Keep an eye on my socials for more versions of this card and a possible video tutorial coming soon (vlog still under construction!)
And as always, take care and happy crafting!
